Inlays and onlays are less invasive than crowns and don’t require as much initial preparation, so more of your natural tooth remains.

Inlays and onlays: what’s the difference?

An inlay is used when a cavity is too substantial for a regular filling – an onlay is an inlay’s more robust counterpart, used to repair back teeth and larger cavities.

What can I expect when getting an inlay or onlay?

Your dentist will examine the cavity and decide whether an inlay or onlay is needed. An impression of the tooth in question will be sent away to the dental lab so your custom inlay or onlay can be created to be an ideal fit for you. Inlays and onlays are cosmetically appealing as they’re made from resin or porcelain, both of which have properties that mimic the look of tooth enamel. The decayed matter is removed and the inlay or onlay placed once we received it back from the lab, a couple of weeks after your initial appointment.
